How Starting My First Supplement Company Was The Best Thing I ever Did

It was at the beginning of 2013 when I first met a lady making $4 million USD per year with a herbal male enhancement formula.

I had always had a love of supplements and the proposed shortcuts they offered to my muscle gains, focus, and general health.

At that time, I was also fascinated by the online Ecommerce world and more importantly – the dream of going to sleep and waking up richer!

The male enhancement lady liked my way with words and offered me a 3-month mentorship if I helped her rewrite and improve her website’s sales copy.

And I came away with enough pieces of the puzzle that I now knew 85% how to start a supplement business.

I also saw my life at that time, the 9-5 grind, and the lack of a decent salary to be like a ball and chain – and so with perseverance and drive I got to work – every minute spent working feeling like a strike of the hammer against that chain.

Well, those first twelve months my supplement business generated $440,000 with just two products…

I split that damn chain.

Financial Freedom But With A Hidden Surprise…

I launched my first supplement business and I remember the revenue like it was yesterday…

Month 1 $1,200
Month 2 $2,400
Month 3 $12,400
Month 4 $25,000

Month 4 I hit $25,000! And I cried. I had spent a good couple of years prior living paycheck to paycheck and so boy did I cry.

The relief of no longer needing to worry about money was overwhelming.

But… I never cried again about the money. I got used to it.

One surprising thing I will never get used to – and one that often brings me to tears – are the emails I receive from people who’s lives my supplements have bettered.

I’m an honest man and I’ll be dead honest right now is saying when I got into this originally – it was for the money.

I was confident enough in my brand building ability that people would love to buy my supplements, but I hadn’t factored that I might start hearing from them!

Within two weeks of launching, ‘thank you’ emails started pouring in. And around month 9, I received an email I’ll never forget. The email read:

“I’m 74 years old and wanted you to know that I’ve been taking your supplement for 6 months. Last week I let go 3 of my 4 helpers and today chopped wood again in the garden for the first time in 7 years.”

I smile because, when I was at school, I always thought I was different… Perhaps like you?… That I’d not be a sheep or a cookie cutter employee.

Instead, whilst I knew I couldn’t change the whole world, I was sure I was going to change someone’s world!

But then life came along and by 35 I had given up hope. I might make it financially I thought, but that didn’t feel satisfying, even though I realised being financially rewarded to actually help people and bring some care back to the world wasn’t so easy.

But, then came along the supplement world… A surefire way to see lucrative returns – whilst actually making people’s lives better.

And I went for it – and it was the best decision I made!

Surprise # 1 – I Sucked At Supplement Marketing – So I did This Instead…

OK, so I didn’t totally suck at marketing… But I was out resourced.

Starting out I ran Ads (though I’ve not ran an Ad for 6 years now) and had a budget of around $10 a day – on the provision that $10 made itself back in sales!

My competitors had $250,000 a month.

Another competitor was looking for seed investment of $10 million USD!

And so I had the same questions you likely have… How do I sell my supplements without borrowing thousands of dollars, and how on earth can I compete?!

Well, I soon found the answer.

LOVE AND CARE!

You see, the one thing I noticed most of my competitors didn’t do was care.

I fast realized I would never get to page 1 on Google through SEO.

I recognized that I would never dominate the paid Ad space for my niche.

And I finally understood that so big were my competitors, that the media was simply never going to give me the time of day and help promote my supplements and what we were doing. 

But I also realized that none of that mattered, because my supplement company had something theirs didn’t… ME and my work ethic.

And I knew building my supplement business with love and care was my competitive advantage.

Where their product pages had 300 words – mine had 3,000!

Where they only had 3 badly written blogs – I had 50 – and each one subtly promoted a product!

Where they had a 30-day guarantee – I gave a full year!

And so it went on.

But I did something NO ONE was doing – I made my customers my business partners.

As soon as I had my first 10 customers, I started emailing them.

I explained the business was growing and I’d like their feedback on the direction to take.

I involved them in every decision I made.

One year when we needed a rebrand/freshen up, I designed 3 completely different label styles and website homepages, and and my 6,000 customers at that time got to vote and choose the final design to go on the bottle.

I used my email list and growing community to assist me in making the right business decisions as we grew… For example, I offered up 6 potential supplements that I could launch that year and they voted on which ones they’d like first – which meant I avoided spending money on supplements my audience didn’t want – and created demand before launch!).

I have my community tell me what topics they’d like covered on the blog.

And twice now I’ve gotten 80+ of my customers to write me a page each for ebooks on Memory Tips, and Productivity Tips!

So I got my community of customers to create content for my community of customers!

The end result is I now have a brand that many different people from all walks of life have helped shape and grow.

And every single time I involve them in the decisions that need to be made, their loyalty and attachment to ‘our’ brand grows.

I tell you this because if you have doubts about your marketing skills – don’t let it hold you back.

Just be different. That’s all I do and to great success.

Make a noise in the marketplace and they will come.

Involve your clients in the business and its direction.

And above all build a community.
